About
Our Mission
The mission of Jacob’s Well Camp is to assist the universal church in making growing followers of Christ by reaching the children of Haiti. JWC provides spiritual discipleship in a safe and fun Haitian environment. Children ages 8-14 are lead in camp recreation by local Haitian leaders for the sake of Gospel-based generational change.
The Key Objectives
1. To provide opportunities for Haitian youth to grow in the Word utilizing the “camp” environment and activities.
2. To encourage the campers to live in the Word.
3. To assist the campers in applying the timeless Word of God to their lives today.
4. To strengthen the family unit through inspiring the youth to share the gospel with their relatives and friends.
The Importance of Jacob’s Well:
In a nation where almost half of the population is children, a camp has the opportunity to reach the future of Haiti in the children of Haiti. Poverty and the Voodoo religion have a stronghold on the people of Haiti. However, this stronghold is no match for the power of Christ. The power of Christ can certainly take a little camp with little children and use them to change lives throughout Haiti. The importance of Jacob’s Well is that the generational change with the gospel can effect the nation of Haiti.
The Name:
There is an old colonial Spanish well on the site which inspired the name. In John 4 Jesus met with a Samaritan woman at “Jacob’s Well”. And now Jacob’s Well Camp is a place where the children of Haiti can meet with Jesus.
The Founders:
The vision for a Christian Youth Camp in Haiti began with Haitian Pastor Gersan Valcin and his wife Betty. Gersan and Betty both accepted the Lord at an early age and grew up in Haiti. They met in New York in 1986 and got married in Canada 3 years later. After graduating from Bethel Bible Institute, Gersan worked as a youth pastor in Quebec for two years before attending Dallas Theological Seminary and obtaining his ThM. In 1997, they and their two daughters answered God’s call to return to minister in Haiti. Thousands of Haitians have heard the Gospel through their efforts, and they have helped start seventy new churches there.
The Beginning and The Now:
Jacob’s Well started as a piece of land. In January 2007 the first team from Frontier camp (a camp who partnered with Jacob’s Well) was sent to help with a day of camp. It was short and it could only serve a few of the children, but it was a good start. Since then many other groups and people developed an interest in the camp. These groups and Frontier Camp have been sending teams every year. As it is developing into an overnight camp, 15 cabins, a shower house, and a kitchen have been built. And now most all of the village kids have been able to participate in the camp. The necessary staff is coming together and God is continuing to use the camp. The Jacob’s Well camp staff is now comprised of locals and partnering with internationals. There are now camps and church retreats going on every year.
